Installation

You'll want to install this theme just like any other WordPress theme, either by uploading the main theme folder via FTP (unzipped) or the zipped file via the Wordpress theme upload section. Make sure you located the main theme folder from the downloaded zip file and that you are not uploading the entire zip with all the documentation, sample data, etc. Watch the

1. Uploading The Theme

a. FTP Method

  • Log into your site via FTP
  • Browse to your folder located at wp-content/themes
  • Upload the MAIN theme folder. This is the folder located inside the "upload" folder in the zip file that you downloaded.
  • Log Into Wordpress and go to Appearance → Themes
  • Find the theme and click to activate

b. WordPress Method

  • Log into your WP dashboard
  • Browse to Appearance →Themes
  • Click to "add new" and then follow the instructions on the screen
  • When it asks to select a file find the zipped theme folder located in the "upload" folder in the zip downloaded.

Sample Data

This theme includes a .xml file that will allow you to import some sample data to your site. We don't provide every single page and image from our live demo because it's overbloated and would be uncessary for you to have all that, but we do include at least 1 of each main theme function to make it easier for you to see how the theme works.

  1. Unzip the purchased folder
  2. Open the SampleData folder and located the sample-data.xml file
  3. Log in to your WordPress dashboard
  4. Go to tools → import
  5. Follow the steps to upload and import the .xml file located on step 2

Once your Sample Data is imported your site should have all the content as shown on the Sample Data Site. Whenever you upload sample data though, you will have to go to Settings → Reading to define your homepage and also go to Apperance → Menu to set your menu locations. Also you will have to setup your widgets as they are not included in a WordPress export.xml.

Theme Options

This theme makes use of the awesome "Options Framework" plugin for the theme options. This plugin must be installed and active in order for you to take advantage of the built-in options, such as the custom logo, any color options, etc. To access this panel you would log into your WordPress dashboard and browse to Apperance → Theme Options, as shown below.

Adding Featured Images & Default Image Sizes

This theme makes use of the WordPress featured images function a lot so you'll need to know how to add featured images.

Image Resizing

Due to the responsive nature of this theme and our effort to keep the quality of your images high, featured images used in this theme have specific cropping sizes. All the image sizing is controlled via a function at includes/default-img-sizes.php. This means you can easily change your featured image sizes via a filter in your child theme if you want.

Images are also cropped using the aqua-resizer script which uses native WordPress functions for cropping your images. This means images are cropped "on-the-fly" so if you make changes to any default image sizing you don't have to run the regenerate thumbnails plugin.

Default Sizes (first value is width and second is height)

If you have selected masonry style on the blog or you have thumbnail_hard_crop set to "false" on any of the post type shortcodes, then the height value will be 9999, which means they won't be cropped at all vertically. Below I'm showing you the hard crop height values.

  • Blog entries: 500px by 350px
  • Blog posts & featured blog slider: 650px by 9999px (no vertical crop)
  • Featured blog slider: 650px by
  • Staff entries: 500px by 450px
  • Staff posts: 650px by 9999px9999px (no vertical crop)
  • Portfolio entries: 500px by 450px
  • Portfolio posts with sidebar: 650px by 9999px9999px (no vertical crop)
  • Portfolio posts full-width: 1000px by 9999px9999px (no vertical crop)
  • Services Icons: These are not cropped but will be resized to 40px by 40px
  • Services posts width sidebar: 650px by 9999px9999px (no vertical crop)
  • Services posts full-width: 650px by 9999px9999px (no vertical crop)

What does it all mean?

· Basically when you upload an image to use on your site it should be at least 500px wide and 450px tall for best quality assurance in the grids.

· If you want your images to cover the full-width on posts then they should be at least 650px wide and if using the full-width layout for services/portfolio items/pages then they should be 100px wide.

· Of course you can upload smaller images, just keep in mind when seting up for example a portfolio, if you are using different image sizes for various posts, the grids might not look perfect since images won't be the same dimensions.

Setting up the Homepage:

The homepage can really be setup however you want it. When you first activate the theme though, it will show your latest blog posts. So to create a homepage much like the ones on the live demo you'll need to do the following.

  1. Login to the WordPress Admin Panel
  2. Select "Pages" > "Add New"
  3. Give your page a title.
  4. Add content to your page. By default the homepage template will display blank. So you'll want to add text and shortcodes in here. You might want to come back after adding your main site's content so you can insert your portfolios, staff, faq, services..etc.
  5. To the right side you will see a block called "Page Attributes" go down to "Template" and select "Homepage" or "Homepage & Sidebar" depending on your preferance.
  6. Yet again on the right side you will see a block called "Publish" click the "Publish" button
  7. Next navigate to "Settings" > "Reading"
  8. At the top of the page you will see "Front page displays", select "A static page" from the options
  9. You will see a select box called "Front page", select the "Homepage" page that you setup earlier
  10. Make sure to leave the "Posts Page" empty

Setting up your Portfolio, Services, FAQ, Staff Pages & Adding Items

This theme comes with custom post type plugins built specifically for WPExplorer users. Why plugins? Well, if you ever decide to switch to another theme you can take all your content with you. We aren't going to force you to use our themes and we don't want you to lose your valuable content/time if you decide to ever switch.

Make sure your plugins are installed

These plugins should be installed automatically on theme activation. If they are you should have the following new menu items in your WordPress dashboard. This is where you'll be adding your content. If they are NOT showing up, go to "Plugins" and make sure the Symple Portfolio, Symple FAQ, Symple Staff, Symple Services Plugins are installed and active.

The Post Type Plugins Won't Install

This is usually because of your server/WP permissions the plugins aren't getting automaticall added to your site. You can always access the plugins by opening your theme's folder locally and browsing to functions/plugins to upload them manually via FTP.

Adding Posts

If you have used WordPress before it should be a no-brainer. Adding your custom post types is basically the same thing as regular posts. You just hover over the menu item and click "Add New Item" then add your title, fill out your info, set your featured image, define your meta options and publish. Some specific tips/tricks for various post types are shown further down.

Archive Pages

By default custom post types in WordPress will create archives automatically at your-site.com/post-type-name. So for example your portfolio will be located at your-site.com/portfolio and your staff page at your-site.com/staff - there is NO need to create page templates to showcase your custom post types. And of course you can create categories and tags for your custom post types, these will also be rendered automatically by the theme's template files.

Using The Shortcodes To Show Your Items

The coolest thing about this theme is you can showcase any of your custom post types on the front-end via a shortcode! Also, you can simply click 1 button to insert your shortcode right in the dashboard. See image below:

Sample Shortcodes

Below are some samples of a shortcode for each post type. Not sure why you would copy it from here, but if you do, make sure you aren't copying the "pre" tag as well as it will cause issues.

Blog Shortcode

[symple_blog count="-1" columns="3" pagination="false" thumbnail_crop="true" thumbnail_hard_crop="false" title="true" excerpt="true" excerpt_length="15" read_more="true" category_id="" tag_id=""]

  • tag_id = the ID of a tag to display instead of showing all posts

How To Find A Category ID or Tag ID

When using your portfolio, staff, services, FAQ.. shortcodes you can easily choose what category or tag to pull your posts from by enteting the ID for that taxonomy. See below on how to find these.

1. Recommended Method:

Install/activate and make use of the WP Show ID's plugin.

2. Alternate Method:

You don't "need" a plugin to find the ID of a category, you can also do it as shown below

Return to the Index

Portfolio & Service Sliders

The Portfolio and Service posts support the ability to enable a post slider (enabled by default). See image below:

How Does It Work?

The slider works by showing all the images attached to your post. So in order to show an image in the slider you MUST upload it to the post (this is how WordPress core works) you can't select images already in your library. The template file will loop through all post attachments automatically for the slider output. See below:

Using The Gallery MetaBox Plugin

We recommend you install and use the MetaBox Plugin for better management. This plugin will show all your attachments below the post editor so its easier for you and/or your client. See below:

Changing your custom post type names & slugs

Since the post types have been added with a unique filter, you can easily change the labels and slug for your post types. The example below could be used in a child theme or in your main theme's functions.php file. PLEASE be CAREFUL when adding custom functions to your site, best done by someone that knows what they are doing.

Changing Main Labels

Symple Shortcodes Usage

This theme of course comes with support and custom styling for the Symple Shortcodes plugin which we developed for free and share on our site.

Using the plugin is very simple. Once activated (should be auto activated with your theme) you'll see a new drop-down button in your post editor which you can use to insert shortcodes into your posts

Shortcode Parameters →

Shortcode Tips

  • Using Columns & Pricing Tables: Use the "Clear Floats" shortcode after every set of columns you add to clear the floats and prevent issues.
  • Columns Overflowing: Don't forget to add position="last" to your last column when using column or pricing shortcodes
  • Need more space: Use the spacing shortcode to add margins/paddings between content
  • Shortcodes Are Messy: HTML mode is great for cleaning up shortcodes
  • Need help! If you have any issues or concerns contact us at our support site for assistance!

Contact Page

Creating a contact page is super simple. In our live demo what we've done is used the map shortcode from the Symple Shortcodes plugin a couple column shortcodes for the layout and then we used the Contact Form 7 plugin for the actual form. It's a free plugin and highly recommended by many.

Our demo contact page...

Below is the code we use, if it makes it easier for you, you can copy and paste into your site (do so in HTML mode in the editor).

Built-in Post Editor Styles

Requesting Support

Please remember you have purchased a really cheap Theme and not paid for a full-time web design agency. Occasionally we will help with small tweaks, but these tickes will be put on a lower priority due to their nature.

Support is also 100% optional and we provide it for your convience, so please be patient, polite and respectful.

Before seeking support, please...
  • Make sure your question is a valid Theme Issue and not a customization request
  • Make sure you have read through the documentation and the video guides before asking support on how to accomplish a task
  • Try disabling any active plugins to make sure there isn't a conflict with a plugin. And if there is this way you can let us know.
  • If you have customized your theme and now have an issue, back-track to make sure you didn't make any mistake. If you have made changes and can't find the issue, please provide us with your changelog.
  • Almost 80% of the time we find that the solution to people's issues can be solved with a simple "Google Search". You might want to try that before seeking support, you might be able to fix the issue yourself much quicker then we can respond to a ticket.
  • Make sure to state the name of the theme you are having issues with in the ticket

Thank you!
